President Al Brito's Inaguration Message, July 3, 2009, Xavier Sports and Country Club, Cagayan de Oro City

In God’s appointed time, all your plans will see its realization.  It was forty (40) years ago, and as I reflect on it, (what a coincidence - same year when the Rotary Club of West Cagayan de Oro was chartered) when I was a recipient of the goodness of the Rotarians coming from the Rotary Club of Escalante.  It  was opening of classes then, and the Rotarians were distributing school supplies and I vividly recall these words spoken to us – the recipient children “YOU STUDY WELL, BE SUCCESSFUL, and be a ROTARIAN SOMEDAY, BECAUSE AS A ROTARIAN, YOU WILL BE GOD’S INSTRUMENT IN HELPING THOSE WHO ARE IN NEED.”  Yes, I dream of being a Rotarian, but I did not aspire to be a president of a Rotary Club, much less of a club that is as active, as vibrant, an achiever club – my club – THE ROTARY CLUB OF WEST CAGAYAN de ORO. My wife can attest to this, as we are a very private family. Even for the members of this club knew what happened two (2) years ago.  But since, I have just taken my oath of office, in all humility; I accept the responsibilities of leading the RC of West Cagayan de Oro for the Rotary Year 2009-2010. RI President's Monthly Message and District 3870 DG's Monthly Message

RI President John Kenny

I am very conscious of the honor that has been bestowed upon me to be president of Rotary International for 2009-10. It is also humbling. My wife, June, and I would like to express our gratitude for the messages of support and encouragement which we have received.

We have come from a small country of five million people with three Rotary districts, and it is, therefore, a special honor to be the first Rotarian from Scotland to be president in the history of Rotary (and only the fifth from the British Isles). Scotland has, however, been at the heart of the organization since Rotary’s earliest days. Our founder Paul Harris’ wife, Jean, was Scottish. She lived in Edinburgh, in my district. The area of Edinburgh was known as Comely Bank and that is why Paul Harris named his house in Chicago “Comely Bank.” There is another early connection with my district in that the first Rotary convention held outside North America was held in Edinburgh in 1921 when, for the first time, home hospitality was offered to delegates attending.

I am conscious of the tradition of Rotary and that I am following in the footsteps of illustrious predecessors in the office of president, and I shall endeavor to uphold the dignity of the office to the best of my ability. I believe that high ethical standards in our business and private life are as important today as they were in the early days of Rotary. To you, President Wilf and President-elect D.K., I give my thanks for the support I have received. Presidents may change, but the office of presidency remains constant and steadfast.

I am here today because someone invited me to become a member of the Rotary Club of Grangemouth, a club whose membership I have enjoyed for 37 years. As I am a lawyer in the town, most of the members were already business associates but became personal friends. Indeed, one of the things I shall miss these next two years is attending the meetings of my club each Thursday at lunchtime.

Communications may make our world seem a smaller place, but there are still too many who are vulnerable, homeless, starving, even without hope. With your help and dedication, I am sure we can try to help alleviate their plight. Do not let us fail to try.

In conclusion, June and I value the trust you have placed in us and which we shall seek to justify. Thank you.

District Governor Bing Juarez

At no other time in the history of Rotary International have challenges been as great and formidable as now.  With the present world scenario of crisis that hounds governments, institutions and organizations, we in Rotary International have in our hands the responsibility of conserving and strengthening this noble organization.  It is therefore apt and timely that the theme for this Rotary year is “The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands.”

We must remember that the strength of Rotary International and her Districts lie in the strength of the individual Rotary clubs.  It is my goal for this term to help the Club Presidents with their management and leadership, hoping to ensure for the District active and vibrant Rotary Clubs for an empowered Rotary International.

This District Directory and Handbook contains a Directory of District Officers, Club Presidents and Secretaries, as well as Administration Guidelines of Rotary Procedures.  This was assembled for consideration and information purposes for effective management and to ensure the cooperation of Clubs and committees in the district.

As our founder Paul Harris has said, “let us keep our hearts strong, enthusiasm fresh, hope high.  As long as we keep imbued with this spirit, Rotary can never die.”  Even in this time of crisis, I challenge all of you to always rally by the power of truth and goodwill and to live everyday according to our tenets and values.  We must all work together to strengthen and empower our Clubs, our District, and Rotary International ultimately for positive change in the world.

Welcome
